Located on Cape Cod Bay, this project addresses the need for additional living space and storage by implementing new ground-up construction adjacent to an existing home. The new barn is conceived as a sibling to the existing structure, conforming to the lines and proportions of the historic home. Material selections of solid wood and shake siding were driven by the client’s desire to establish the barn as an extension of their home. Storage and living functions occupy separate levels with dedicated entries. On the ground floor, custom automated doors provide modern functionality while referencing swing doors characteristic of older carriage houses. At the upper level, the laminated trusses remain exposed, maximizing light for the loft.
