This project is a light-touch transformation to a home in Springs, East Hampton that has been in the same family for generations. For the homeowners, the place is filled with happy memories. The renovation affects as little of the home as possible to create an outsized impact to the shingled home and the active family’s lifestyle.
A screened porch at the back of the property was one of the family’s favorite spaces to hang out and enjoy their Long Island summer days. The kitchen, meanwhile, was tucked away from the living spaces, in an arrangement that didn’t reflect a contemporary, open-concept lifestyle.
The screened porch has been transformed into a cathedral-ceiling kitchen, with large sliding doors that lead out to the back yard. This opens new sightlines from the front of the house all the way to the yard and makes the home flow much more naturally.
A new staircase leads to the den, which used to be only accessible from the outside.
Preserving the character of this beloved house while creating a brighter, more spacious layout will ensure that the family will enjoy it for many more years to come.
