Located in Greenpoint, this project is both a renovation and expansion of an existing townhouse. The objective of the project was to expand the building area to the maximum allowable footprint by the zoning lot. Constrained by party walls at either side, the design builds vertically, taking advantage of light, air, and views of the park nearby and Manhattan in the distance. To support the added height, a new structural frame of steel beams and columns was designed to sit over the original timber-frame structure. Existing plumbing, heating, and asbestos were carefully removed to make way for modernized infrastructure and new low VOC finishes.
